Kelpies recognised with Hall of Fame status
THE outstanding feats of two Kelpies will be officially recognised at this year's June long weekend celebrations with their induction into the "Kelpie Hall of Fame".
The two dogs will enter the newly-introduced Hall of Fame after winning the same event three times at previous Australian Kelpie Musters.
Riley won the hearts of Kelpie fans for three years running as he soared to new heights in the popular high jump competition.
Rescued from the pound by Clare O’Callaghan of Welshpool, Riley won his first high jump event at Casterton in 2006 jumping 2.89 metres. He backed up in 2007 to jump a staggering 2.91 metres – a record that remains unbeaten.
Riley then made it a hat trick in 2008 by jumping 2.625 metres and claiming equal first prize.
The Hall of Fame award will be presented to Riley and his owner Clare O’Callaghan following this year’s high jump competition, which starts at 12.30pm on Saturday, June 6.
The second Kelpie Hall of Fame inductee is an eight-year-old black and tan Kelpie named Roy who won the dog division of the Stockman’s Challenge in 2005, 2007 and 2008.
Under the guidance of his owner, Greg Featherston of Dunkeld, Roy has proved his superiority in this division where he is required to race the clock in manoeuvring 15 sheep through a set course of obstacles, over a ramp and into sheep yards.
According to Greg Featherston, Roy loves nothing better than getting out in the paddock to muster sheep and cattle.
“Roy enjoys working stock and no matter how difficult the job is, I can rely on Roy to get it done right every time,” Greg said.
Greg will accept the Hall of Fame award on Roy’s behalf following the Stockman’s Challenge at Masonic Park on Saturday, June 6.
Framed photographs complete with plaques outlining their accomplishments will be on permanent display in Casterton’s Glenelg Inn.
